Special Education Designee

Summary

The primary function of the Special Education Designee is to provide support and services outlined in the standards legally and professionally and support an organizational framework efficiently and appropriately within the special education programs including students with exceptional educational needs. 


Under the Direction of the LEA Supervisor, the Special Education Designee is responsible for assisting with the implementation and maintenance of the school aged Special Education programs and services in conformance to district, state, and federal objectives and laws; planning, designing, and implementing all phases of service provided by the Special Education staff, including, but not limited to 504 and Due Process.


The Special Education Designee will assist with the planning, development, organization, management, implementation of all programs, and compliance with all laws, regulations, and state and district procedures.The Designee is the onsite representative of the LEA Supervisor.

Education, Experience, Skills, and Certification




Required

    • Five (5) years’ experience in special education with experience in the classroom
    • Valid special education credential
    • Ability and comfort in working in a fast-paced environment with a demonstrated ability to be flexible
    • Excellent analytical and data-based decision-making skills
    • Strong customer service orientation in approach to working with teachers, school administrators, and families

Preferred

    • Master’s Degree minimum of Bachelor’s Degree  
    • Valid Education Specialist Teaching credential

Primary Performance Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist in the coordination and supervision of the day-to-day operation of special education programs  
  • Assist in evaluating students and placing them in appropriate programs 
  • Assist with the development, placement, implementation and evaluation of programs and services for students with disabilities  
  • Schedule and Facilitate all student service conferences with the exception of Annual Review conferences
  • Recommend changes and/or modifications to various special education programs
  • Recommend materials, approaches, and methodology to teachers of students with special education needs
  • Assess the needs for staff development and provide the LEA Supervisor with recommendations regarding professional training on specific education and other topics as needed
  • Provide in-service for staff on special education topics
  • Collaborate and communicate special education with regular education when appropriate
  • Serve as a liaison between special or regular education teachers and with external agencies involved in programming for individual children with disabilities
  • Assist in the planning, supporting, developing, and teaching of students who need special services in a program
  • Facilitate 504 conferences
  • Coordinate 504 services
  • Collaborate with the District Testing Coordinator to assess the students with Individual Educational Plans and 504 plans in the appropriate assessments 
  • Collaborate with Building Principal to supervise and evaluate special education staff performance and program suitability
  • Prepare all forms that are required to ensure legal compliance with the state and federal laws that pertain to special education
  • Establish and maintain appropriate record keeping that is required for all students in pupil services/special education programs
  • Prepare all reports required by the state or district concerning pupil services/special education
  • Submit regular (minimum monthly) reports  concerning pupil services and special education to the LEA Supervisor and/or other administrators as requested and/or required
  • Submit annual reports concerning pupil services and special education to the LEA Supervisor and/or District Administration
  • Maintain appropriate levels of confidentiality related to work and information handled by the Office of Student Services
  • Keep the Building and District Administrators informed of his/her responsibilities concerning compliance with all laws, regulations and administrative rules that affect special education/pupil service programs
  • Consult, Communicate, and Collaborate with LEA Supervisor and District Administrator on legal concerns; parent/guardian/student issues, and concerns from the Division of Elementary and Secondary Education
  • Assist in the recruiting, interviewing, and hiring of special education staff 
  • Other duties as assigned by the LEA Supervisor or Superintendent.
