The Watson Chapel Board of Education announces possible openings for a Secondary Counselor

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Secondary Counselor License, Subject Specific Endorsement or enrolled in Alternative Program leading to license for this position issued by Arkansas Department of Education.
  • Experience as a Secondary Counselor Preferred. 
  • Must satisfactorily complete Bureau of Criminal Investigation background check.

 

Desired:

  • Ability to operate general office equipment in the performance of daily activities. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and their parents, District staff, and all other groups involved in the activities of the job.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, school staff, district staff, and patrons.
  • Ability to work with staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered by the guidance department, and to improve the educational prospects of individual students being counseled.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

  • Plans and/or promotes programs which enhance the academic, social or emotional growth of students, e.g., Curriculum Fair, Career Fair, Underclass Honors Assembly & Senior Honors Program, Graduation, opportunities for student enrichment and/or remediation, scholarship opportunities and parent informational programs;
  • Meets with seniors once each semester and mailing updates on their graduation status to their parents;
  • Insures that students are aware of requirements for graduation and college admission, as well as any NCAA requirements that may be necessary for athletic participation;
  • Works to prevent students from dropping out of school;
  • Helps students develop post-secondary educational plans in accordance with their interests, abilities and career plans;
  • Assists students with the completion of college admissions applications;
  • Assists the principal in the preparation of diploma lists and identification of honor graduates in preparation for the Senior Honors Program and Graduation;
  • Assures that appropriate, accurate information is maintained in each student’s permanent, cumulative record; and makes necessary schedule changes for individual students that are both appropriate for their abilities and aligned with their educational and career plans.
  • Assists the high school principal and staff in the registration of all students, helps to orient them to school procedures and its varied opportunities for learning, and ensure that they are enrolled in proper courses and subjects so as to meet the graduation requirements of the District.
  • Works with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems, as related to home and family, health, and emotional adjustment.
  • Works to prevent students from dropping out of school.
  • Selects and administers, and/or coordinates the standardized testing efforts of the high school under the auspices of the principal,
  • Assists the principal in maintaining the permanent cumulative files for each student.
  • Plans guidance field trips to schools, colleges, businesses and industry for interested students, as well as having those organizations visit the school in an annual "Career Day" program.
  • Helps students make the occupational choice, post-secondary educational choices, and career evaluations that will lead them to meaningful, successful and rewarding work.
  • Insures that an up-to-date library of catalogs, school profiles, scholarship information, testing information, advanced placement information, etc. related to schools, colleges, and institutions offering post-secondary training and/or education is maintained by the high school. Also, insure that the school website is updated with most current scholarship information and make sure students and parents are aware that scholarship information is available on the school website.
  • Acquaints students (and parents) with college entrance requirements, and help them to make a realistic comparison between the student's record and abilities, and the specific entrance requirements of the college in which the student is interested.
  • Arranges conferences with students for college admission officers who visit the high school.
  • Aids senior students with all of the processes of college application including application for financial aid where needed.
  • Oversees the calculation of senior grade point averages and class rankings, and processing of transcripts.
  • Prepares and supervise the processing of evaluations, recommendations, and other forms as required in connection with college applications.
  • Recognizes the extent of his/her training and refer to other specialists those pupils whose problems go beyond his/her skills.
